Some volunteers steady a club. Others quietly transform it. Julie Raszyk has done exactly that at Dunsborough Tennis Club.
Over the past two years as Club Captain, Julie has brought a renewed sense of energy and connection to the club, working closely with the committee to introduce fresh ideas, grow participation and create an environment where members of all ages feel welcome to be involved. The result has been a noticeable shift, not just in numbers, but in the overall spirit of the club.
A strong focus for Julie has been junior engagement. This season, she actively encouraged junior social play and pennant participation, often attending herself to help organise matches or cook sausages on the sidelines. That consistent presence has had a ripple effect, with parents becoming more engaged, picking up racquets themselves and building stronger ties within the club community.
Julie has also successfully re-established the Club Championships, promoting the events in a way that encouraged both long time and newer members to take part. Whether it was helping organise draws or even matchmaking players where needed, her efforts created a welcoming and competitive atmosphere, resulting in a high standard of play across both singles and doubles.
Off the court, her impact has been just as meaningful. From organising Captain’s Table lunches at local venues to hosting a Christmas in July celebration, Julie has created opportunities for members to connect beyond tennis. These events, often attracting strong attendance, have helped strengthen relationships and foster a genuine sense of belonging.
Looking outward, Julie has worked to build connections beyond the club as well. She initiated an invitation to Bridgetown Tennis Club to join Saturday social play and stay for dinner, with plans to expand these connections to other regional clubs. Closer to home, she has also helped bring different sporting groups together within the broader club environment, organising a social bowls afternoon that connected tennis players with members of the bowling section, reinforcing a shared and inclusive club culture.
Another key initiative has been the introduction of Sunday afternoon social play, adding an extra opportunity each week for members to get on court in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
The outcomes of Julie’s leadership have been clear. Adult membership has grown, particularly among younger players. Junior numbers have increased, along with parent involvement. A consistent calendar of events now gives the club rhythm and energy throughout the year. Most importantly, there is a stronger sense of connection across all areas of the club.
Julie’s enthusiasm, initiative and willingness to give her time have helped shape a more vibrant, inclusive and engaged tennis community. She embodies the spirit of National Volunteer Week, showing how one person’s commitment can inspire many.
