After ten rounds of home and away action, we have settled on the final four. This weekend is set to serve up some mouthwatering matches with matches spread across three days.
MEN’S STATE LEAGUE
Mt Lawley v Claremont at Mt Lawley Tennis Club
Friday 13 March, 6 pm
The semifinals kick off with a massive Friday night match under lights at Mt Lawley Tennis Club. These two sides only met last week with Mt Lawley winning 5-1, although it was against a weaker Claremont side. The win saw Mt Lawley leapfrog Claremont and seal a home semifinal.
In the home and away season, both sides have tasted success. In round 5, Claremont won 4-2 with a stronger side which featured Ethan Cook and Tim Gray who both didn’t feature in round 10. The key will be who plays for each team with Claremont and Mt Lawley having both used at least seven players throughout the season.
Hans Bustiman has been the most consistent for Claremont, Bustiman has a 7-2 record in singles and has played every match this season. Ethan Cook and Tim Gray have both been impressive with each recording a 5-1 singles record this season. Jayden Court’s four matches throughout the season sees him also qualify for finals and if he plays, will make the side extremely strong.
For Mt Lawley, availability from Jake Dembo will go a long way to helping his club win the semifinal, Dembo is the only amongst these two teams to be undefeated so far this season. Regulars in Casey Ambler (5-2 win-loss), Luca Katsamakis (3-3 win-loss) and Reuben Giorgio (6-2 win-loss) have all played their part and had some important wins.
Cottesloe v Royal Kings Park at Cottesloe Tennis Club
Saturday 14 March, 12.30 pm
The two grass court specialist teams will battle it out at Cottesloe in what could be a closer game than you think. Cottesloe have dropped just the one game all season but go in without a win since Round 8. Former State League MVP Max Weir has been the standout all season having not lost a singles tie. At their strongest Cam Burton (3-2 win-loss record), Ben Webster (3-2 win-loss) and Sehun Park (3-1 win-loss) have all shown strong form throughout the season with more wins than losses.
For Royal Kings Park, the away team have remained consistent this season which could put them in good stead. Zac Itzstein has shown he is still capable of matching it with the best while Lincoln Duckett in his first season of State League has brought it with the best, winning four singles matches this season. In round 5 the two sides met with Cottesloe winning 6-0.
WOMEN’S STATE LEAGUE
Cottesloe v Dalkeith at Cottesloe Tennis Club
Saturday 14 March, 12.30 pm
Cottesloe’s season was almost perfect until the last round where they dropped their first game of the season to Royal Kings Park. Cottesloe goes into the tie having won both their matches during the season against Dalkeith. The Cottesloe side consists of rising star Elena Manoj who has gone through the season without dropping a singles match and Jess Culley who has a 6-2 win-loss record. New addition to the team, Nisha Whittome has also shown some good form, winning four singles matches this season. The experience and talent of Alicia Molik will also ensure the home team are the firm favourites.
The make-up of the Dalkeith side will be the key to giving them the biggest chance of causing an upset. Dalkeith have used at least eight players throughout the season but should see in form players Hayley Burton and Isabelle Criddle line up. Burton has been the team’s best in terms of results, winning six singles matches and only losing one this season. Criddle has become a regular this season and elevated herself as one of the team’s best with a 5-2 singles record this season. While results haven’t gone her way, Tara Aleksic is no easy beat, regularly playing in the number one spot with plenty of finals experience.
Royal Kings Park v Hensman Park at Royal Kings Park
Saturday 14 March, 12.30 pm
This is set to be a mouthwatering clash between the two sides. Both Hensman Park and Royal Kings Park have both tasted success between each other this season with the most recent matchup seeing Royal Kings Park win easily, 6-0 in round 9. Hensman Park has seen the return of Anja Dokic in round 10 which will be a big inclusion to the side. Karin Hiramatsu has led from the front for Hensman Park having won five singles matches so far this season. Zayah Baker has made the most of her matches this season, having a 100% win rate from her three singles matches. Ella Nurkic has been next best, winning three singles matches this season.
Royal Kings Park goes into the tie with some serious form. The home side is currently on a four match winnings streak which includes the big win against ladder leaders Cottesloe. Mahta Khanloo has been a big driver of that, winning her last four singles ties while youngsters Jasmin Heapes, Sumner Royall and Claudia Shearwood have seen recent success winning both their last two of three matches.
