17 December 2025 | Tennis West

Tennis fans and players in Western Australia, mark your calendars. The AO 1 Point Slam is barreling toward its dramatic conclusion, and our state final will be staged at Royal Kings Park Tennis Club, a venue as storied as it is central to Perth’s tennis community. This is your chance to follow or even be part of something truly special.

The 1 Point Slam Driven by Kia is a fast-paced, high-stakes showdown that will see 48 players pros, amateurs and celebrity wildcards battle it out for $1 million in prize money in a one-point knockout format on Wednesday 14 January under the lights of Rod Laver Arena.

At its heart, the 1 Point Slam is exactly what its name promises: each match is decided by a single point. Competitors determine who serves (via rock–paper–scissors, coin toss or other host-determined method), the server chooses a side, and the point is played. Win the point, you move on; lose it, you’re out. It’s simple, it’s nerve-wracking, and it levels the playing field, amateurs, club regulars and seasoned pros all have the same shot.

So far, clubs across Australia, including several in WA, have already run their community-level 1 Point Slam events. For example: Those winners now advance to their state-level championship, the next step on the ladder toward the national spotlight.

Community winners ready for their shot at glory in a couple weeks include:

  • Christopher Spooner from Blue Gum Park tennis Club
  • Isaac Agnew from Nedlands Tennis Club
  • Elliot Moyle from Alexander Park Tennis Club
  • Phillip Ly from Manning Tennis Club
  • Diego Gomez from Bayswater Tennis Club
  • Gabriel Teague from Safety Bay Tennis Club
  • Corey Hill from Mandurah Tennis Club
  • Steve Yarwood from Cottesloe Tennis Club
  • Benjamin Lantu from Nollamara Tennis Club

In Western Australia, the official State Championship has been scheduled for Saturday 20 December 2025 at Royal Kings Park Tennis Club at 1 pm.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Win the state final, and you earn a place in the national Main Draw, when 48 players (pros, wildcards, state champions and qualifiers) take the stage at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne during Opening Week of Australian Open 2026. The winner will receive return airfares to Melbourne, two nights’ accommodation, and the ultimate AO Player experience as well as win their local club a $5,000 tennis grant.

Apart from the chance to win AUD 1 million in prize money, the club or school you represent stands to win a $50,000 tennis grant if you clinch the title.

World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz and Nick Kyrgios are already confirmed, with more top names to be announced soon.

Kia is raising the stakes even further, donating a brand-new EV3 to the last amateur standing in the 1 Point Slam main draw.

“The AO 1 Point Slam is tennis at its most exciting – one point, one shot at glory. It’s fast, unfiltered and open to everyone,” Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said.

“This event is the ultimate grassroots-to-Grand Slam experience. It’s exciting to see our eight State Champions being crowned across the country who will have a shot to live out their Grand Slam dream on the biggest stage this January.”

Whether you’re a seasoned pennant player, a weekend social-hit enthusiast, or someone who’s never competed before, the 1 Point Slam offers a genuine pathway from your local club all the way to the biggest stage in Australian tennis. And with the WA State Final happening right here at Royal King’s Park, it’s as real and as close as it gets.
