The 2025 D’Arcy Slater and Women in Tennis (WIT) Foundation Cup wrapped up in Bunbury this week for both the team and individual events drawing a record number of entries again.

A record number of 155 players came from all over the state of Western Australia with participants coming from as far south as Albany, as far north as Broome and as far east as Esperance and Merredin making the journey to Bunbury Tennis Club for four days of competition.

A total of 754 matches were played over the four days across all divisions. In the Boy’s D’Arcy Slater Cup, Lower Great Southern went back-to-back in the teams competition over South West 1. Like last year, Upper Great Southern edged out South West 2 for the bronze spot.

In the Girls Women in Tennis Foundation Cup, Lower Great Southern won their third consecutive teams title with South West girls going one better than last year finishing in the Silver Medal position and Central Districts coming in third.

In the prestigious individual event of the D’Arcy Slater Cup, last year’s winner Denby Sharpe from Albany (Lower Great Southern) prevailed over Dylan Stone from the Lower Great Southern to claim his fourth title. The winner and finalist both received a scholarship for their tennis development thanks to the D’Arcy Slater Foundation.

In the girl’s WIT Foundation Cup, Tea Zizek from Albany (Lower Great Southern) won her third title overcoming Leila Cordero from South West in straight sets.

Going on from last year, the D’Arcy Slater Foundation offered a scholarship for the winner and finalist. The scholarship recipients will receive financial support for tennis expenses including tournament travel, coaching and event entry costs.

Tennis West Tournament Director Brad Ladyman praised the increase in numbers and community support behind this tournament.

“It was fantastic to host this year’s event at Bunbury Tennis Club, especially seeing the growth in participation from regional players across the state — from Broome to Esperance.”

“The record-breaking numbers is a fantastic result for regional junior tennis development pathways.”

“Tennis West truly appreciates the incredible efforts of our regional coordinators and coaches who make it possible for these teams to attend. Special mention to Andrew Woodward and the team from the Bunbury Tennis Club who did a mountain of work to get the event up and running. Congratulations to Lower Great Southern for an outstanding performance, taking out both the D’Arcy Slater Cup and the Women in Tennis Foundation Cup,” said Brad.

This event would not be possible without the great support of the D’Arcy Slater and Women’s in Tennis Foundation.

Supporting the D’Arcy Slater Cup since 2004, the D’Arcy Slater Foundation continues to do so in recognition of D’Arcy’s great love of tennis. D’Arcy, who tragically drowned in the flooded Helena River in 1991, was an enthusiastic member of the Goomalling Tennis Club, the Guildford Grammar School Preparatory School tennis team and the Captain of tennis in year 8. The Foundation’s sponsorship is country focused in recognition of D’Arcy’s enjoyment of playing country tennis tournaments.

Supporting the Foundation Cup since 2002, Women in Tennis continue to champion for opportunities in tennis for all female players including players within both metropolitan and regional WA.
