WA has a new WA Open singles champion with Karin Hiramatsu crowned the singles champion for the first time with a tough three set thriller of Mahta Khanloo.

The near perfect spring weather set the tone for what was a nail-biting match that could of gone both ways. Last year’s finalist and top ranked seed Mahta Khanloo edged out Hiramatsu in the first set, winning the tie break before Hiramatsu fought back with a 6-2 second set win. Hiramatsu managed to hold firm in the third set match tie break, winning 10-6.

The third seed Hiramatsu came into the final after a nail-biting semi-final against Elena Manoj. Manoj was one set up and at one point in the final tie break set had two match points with Hiramatsu defending both to then clinch the win.

Khanloo was impressive on her way to the final, defeating Isabelle Chiew and seeded players Isabelle Criddle and Claudia Shearwood all in straight sets.

In the men’s, number one seed Scott Jones was too good all tournament going into the final without dropping a set. Jones was pushed in the first set by last year’s WA Open men’s champion Hans Bustiman, winning the first set 7-6 before showing his class to prevail 6-0 in the second set and win his second WA Open singles title. By winning the WA Open, Jones receives a wildcard entry into the main draw of the Perth Tennis International ITF M25 #1.

In the doubles finals, number one seeds Karin Hiramatsu and Claudia Shearwood defeated Isabelle Criddle and Jasmin Heapes 6-3 6-2. While in the men’s, number one seeds Tim Gray and Scott Jones defeated Cottesloe pair Max Weir and Adam Kehane 6-2 6-3.

All sights will be set on the Perth Tennis International ITF M25, where qualifying starts on Sunday.
