The men’s and women’s State League resumes this weekend after a two-month hiatus over the Christmas and New Year period.

Going into the Christmas break, Cottesloe (71 points) in the men’s competition held top position on the ladder but were closely followed by Peppermint Grove (second place on 67 points) and Mt Lawley/Sorrento (third place on 58 points) with less than a win separating the three teams.

The race for the fourth-place position and last spot in the finals will heat up with Royal Kings Park (fourth place on 36 points) and Alexander Park (fifth place on 34 points) vying for the final spot. UWA sit in last place (14 points) but finished the first half of the season with an impressive win over Mt Lawley/Sorrento.

In the women’s competition, Hensman Park (87 points) remain on top spot and are the only undefeated team in the competition. Cottesloe (76 points) sits close behind them in second place with just the one loss coming from Hensman Park. The race for the last two finals spots will heat up with Peppermint Grove (third place on 44 points), Royal Kings Park (fourth place on 42 points) and Dalkeith (fifth place on 31 points) all looking to improve in the second half of the season. Alexander Park rounds out the six on eight points.

Round 7 Preview

Round 7 in the men’s State League competition will see two Friday night matches with Mt Lawley/Sorrento hosting Peppermint Grove at Sorrento Tennis Club and UWA hosting Alexander Park.

Both matches will have huge ramifications for the rest of the season. A win for either Mt Lawley/Sorrento or Peppermint Grove will nearly cement their place in the top two and stay in the running for top spot. The top two spots will be key as first and second place will host the semi-finals.

It’s a must win game for UWA on Friday night as they look to edge their way back in the competition. After surprising Mt Lawley/Sorrento in the last round before Christmas, the home side will fancy their chances against Alexander Park who sit one spot above them on the ladder. For Alexander Park, a win will keep them well within contention for the top four.

On Saturday, ladder leaders Cottesloe host Royal Kings Park. The match also poses a key one for both sides with a win cementing Cottesloe’s spot at the top and a win for Royal Kings Park keeps them in the top four. Last time they played, it was Cottesloe who won, winning 4-1.

In the women’s State League competition, the clash between Royal Kings Park and Peppermint Grove will be one to keep a close eye on. Both teams are separated by only two points and a win for either team would cement their place in the top four. A loss would all but end their hopes of a top two final and a home final while also battling it out for a spot in the finals.

Cottesloe travels to Dalkeith in another important clash for both sides. Dalkeith must start finding some wins to keep their finals hopes alive while Cottesloe need to win to stay in contention with top spot. Dalkeith challenged Cottesloe last time out, winning two rubbers and only just losing in two other rubbers meaning the side has potential to cause an upset.

The final match up sees ladder leaders Hensman Park travel to Alexander Park. Hensman Park have barely put a foot wrong this season, currently with a 6-0 win-loss record while Alexander Park is at the opposite end, yet to register a win this season but have been competitive at times.
