This month, we proudly shine the spotlight on Quintin and Abby Maseyk, two incredible volunteers whose dedication has transformed their local club’s tennis community. As the driving force behind the popular Singles “Ladder Up” competition, which now boasts an impressive seven divisions, Quintin and Abby have not only elevated singles tennis but also fostered stronger connections among our members. Their passion, energy, and love for the game have made a lasting impact, inspiring players of all ages and skill levels to embrace the sport and the inclusive spirit of the Ocean Ridge Tennis Club.
How did you get started with tennis?
My father (Abby), a top regional tennis player in New Zealand, introduced the sport to my five brothers and me at a young age, dedicating countless hours to teaching us—something he continues to do even now. As teenagers, we often spent multiple sessions on the courts each day, thoroughly enjoying the game. When I met my husband, Quintin, I introduced him to tennis, and in recent years, he has become increasingly dedicated and competitive.
Why join Ocean Ridge Tennis Club, and what motivates you to volunteer there?
Initially, we were hesitant about joining a club since we hadn’t played competitively for several years due to raising young children. However, the club’s convenient location and the warm welcome we received at Ocean Ridge Tennis Club made the decision easy. We both enjoy playing singles, so when Samantha Vallet, the club president, invited us to manage the singles ladder competition we eagerly accepted. We call the program “LadderUp,” and if anyone is interested in improving their singles game, they can find out more here.
What motivates us to volunteer is seeing our club’s inclusivity—it supports players of all ages. Watching our kids socialise with other children while enjoying the sport brings us so much joy.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement while volunteering at Ocean Ridge Tennis Club?
Managing the LadderUp competition has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Seeing players out on the court, hearing whispers in the hallway about LadderUp, and watching people climb the ladder—that’s what it’s all about!
What is your favourite part about being involved in the tennis community in WA?
We enjoy playing pennants. It’s fantastic to see so many divisions, allowing players of all skill levels to participate. We also love the friendly doubles matches with our friends, which add a great social element to the game. On top of that, it has been rewarding to watch our children develop their tennis skills and foster a true passion for the sport.
What would be the one main piece of advice you’d give to someone thinking about getting into tennis or volunteering?
Even the pros were beginners at some point! If you enjoy watching tennis on TV, we believe you’ll love playing it in real life. Just grab some rackets, join a few social tennis events, and take it from there.
Every month we are asking you to nominate a volunteer, event or something special that is making a difference at your local club! Each monthly winner will be shared in the Tennis West Cross Court newsletter and will receive a double pass to a United Cup session of choice (excluding finals).
