The weekend saw some close matches with one match going down to games. It now all comes down to the final with both matches to be played this Saturday. 

WOMEN’S 

Hensman Park defeated Peppermint Grove 4-1 

Hensman Park once again showed why they are the team to beat with an impressive win over last year’s premiers Peppermint Grove.

Peppermint Grove started the fixture well with No. 1 seed Jessie Culley finishing her season with an impressive win over Hensman Park’s Anja Dokic 6-1, 7-6. The hot start didn’t last long when Alice Stevens overcame Tara Aleksic 6-1, 6-2 and Ella Nurkic defeated Nisha Whittome 6-3, 6-4. Peppermint Grove’s Shona Lee took the first set over Ksenija Vujacic and the tie looked to be going at 2-2 into the doubles, however Vujacic fought back well claiming the second set then winning the match tie-break 10-8.

Hensman Park only needed to win one of their doubles rubbers to advance and it was led by Alice Stevens and Anja Dokic who battled hard with Mary-Jane Quinn and Shona Lee to edge pass winning 6-3, 7-5. In the other doubles match, Peppermint Grove’s Jessie Culley and Tara Aleksic took the first set over Ella Nurkic and Alfee Stevens but the tie was decided in the other doubles match.

 

Alexander Park defeated Royal Kings Park 3-3 (AP won on games 62-60) 

The feature match was hard to split with both sides taking it to the end to force a result. The singles rubbers were tied at 2-2 with Royal Kings Park’s Amy Findlay defeating Peyton Duckett in three sets. Findlay won the first set 6-2 but was challenged in the second losing 1-6 but held her nerve to take the match tie-break 10-4. Saanvi Tak also won her match for Royal Kings Park with a straight sets win over Katy O’Shea 7-6, 6-3.

For Alexander Park, Sheridan Currie took out Amelia Tatafu 6-3, 5-7, while Madeleine Watson came from a set down to win the match tie-break in a nail-biting 12-10 finish.

With the tie coming down to the doubles, both doubles rubbers went to three sets. Findlay and Ruzic (Royal Kings Park) won their fixture against Duckett and Watson (Alexander Park) 2-6, -5, 10-5 while Alexander Park’s O’Shea and Currie edged out Tatafu and Tak 5-7, 6-2, 10-3. In the end, just two games were the difference with Alexander Park going through to the final.

Hensman Park now hosts Alexander Park in the women’s State League final this Saturday.

 

MEN’S 

Cottesloe defeated UWA 3-1 

Home side Cottesloe continued their strong form at home with a convincing 3-1 win over UWA. While the singles were won in straight sets, UWA pushed Cottesloe hard as shown by UWA’s No. 1 seed Hans Bustiman narrowly losing to Cottesloe’s Scott Webster in a 6-4, 7-6 win.

Cottesloe’s Ethan Dunn and Will Hann won their rubbers against Tim Gray and Chris Lawrance with straight set wins however, UWA’s Luca Katsamakis kept UWA hopes alive with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over Cam Burton.

In the doubles, Cottesloe just needed to win one set from the two rubbers to progress and both pairings managed to claim the first set. Hann and Webster won their first set against Gray and Lawrance while Dunn and Kehane grabbed the first set against Bustiman and Katsamakis and took an unassailable lead to take out the tie.

 

Peppermint Grove defeated Alexander Park 3-3 (PG won on sets 8-7) 

Friday night’s clash proved to be a nail biter with the result coming down to the final set of the doubles. Alexander Park started the evening well on the hard courts of Peppermint Grove grabbing a 3-1 lead after the singles rubbers.

Jayden Court provided Peppermint Grove with their only win in the singles with a straight sets win over Alexander Park’s Scott Jones 6-4, 6-2. For Alexander Park, Daniel Downey and Austin Vos both won in crucial match tie-breaks against Sam Ashenden and Luca Vujacic while Ashwin Sharma defeated Sam Chapman 6-4, 6-3.

Peppermint Grove showed their strength in the doubles. Needing to win both doubles matches to advance to the final, Jayden Court and Sam Chapman secured the much-needed win, winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 against Scott Jones and Evan Manso. The deciding rubber went down to the wire with Jake Robinson and Sam Ashenden coming from a set down to win 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 against Ashwin Sharma and Daniel Downey.

Peppermint Grove now travel to Cottesloe Tennis Club this Saturday to take on last year’s premiers Cottesloe in the State League final.
