Tennis West’s First Nations Metro Squad kicked off the year with an inspiring session at Dalkeith Tennis Club last Friday.

Led by their dedicated coach and Dalkeith Tennis Club Women’s State League captain Lauren Nikoloski, the squad engaged in a dynamic training session focused on skill development and team building.

This is the first time the squad has had the opportunity to train off-site together and on grass courts.

The session provided a platform for Perth’s First Nations junior tennis players to hone their tennis skills in a supportive and inclusive environment, highlighting Tennis West’s commitment to diversity and equity in the sport.

After the training, the squad had the opportunity to stay and watch their coach showcase her skills in a State League singles match against Hensman Park Tennis Club, further motivating and inspiring them in their tennis journey.

It was a pleasure to be hosted by Dalkeith Tennis Club after receiving the invite from Dalkeith Tennis Club President Annette Livesey to kick off the squad season at the vibrant club.

First Nations Metro Squad coach Lauren Nikoloski saw the opportunity to coach the team and promote equity and inclusion amongst diverse populations.

“I want to inspire them to improve their repertoire for longevity, alongside promoting a safe and cohesive learning environment so the kids are comfortable & confident with their ability both physically and mentally.”

“All training sessions are aimed to maximise enjoyment, intensity and competitiveness, assisting a smooth transition into the tournament scene,” said Nikoloski.

This squad meets every Friday afternoon at the State Tennis Centre in terms one and term four.

Tennis West Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Lead Zara Cavalot highlighted the continued development of their tennis skills as part of a tennis pathway.

“It was great for the squad to see some of the best tennis players in the state play and get the chance to train on grass courts.”

“The aim of the program is to foster a sense of community and pride among the players and their families, showcasing the power of sport in bringing people together,” said Cavalot.
