The final round of State League some late moves up and down the ladder. See how each team went. 

MEN’S 

UWA defeated Blue Gum Park 5-1 

UWA held onto fourth spot and a home final after defeating Blue Gum Park at home on the clay courts. All four UWA players won their singles matches in straight sets and proved too strong on clay. The pick of the players was UWA’s Hans Bustiman defeating Nathan Schupelius 6-1, 6-3.

In the doubles, Blue Gum Park’s Schupelius and Fairclough got the better of Lawrance and Gray 6-3, 6-4 which ultimately denied UWA of third spot but Bustiman continued his form, teaming up with Katsamakis defeating Blue Gum Park’s Jayaprakash and Brown in straight sets 6-3, 7-6.

The win sees UWA play Blue Gum Park in a rematch on the clay courts of UWA Tennis Club.

 

Peppermint Grove defeated Alexander Park 5-1 

The match had a lot riding on with the winning team confirming a top two spot and a second chance. Peppermint Grove proved too strong at home with all four singles matches going Peppermint Grove’s way.

Jayden Court made it four wins from four for the season with straight sets win over Ashwin Sharma. Jake Robinson recorded his first win of the season with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Downey. Sam Chapman (Peppermint Grove) was made to work against young gun George Diable. Chapman lost the first set but came back winning 4-6, 7-5, 10-5.

The doubles proved to be important for Alexander Park with one rubber needed to hold onto third spot. Manso and Downey fought back from a set down to win the match tie break 10-8 seal a vital rubber win.

Peppermint Grove get the second chance and play last year’s premiers Cottesloe while Alexander Park plays against Mt Lawley/Sorrento at home in an elimination match.

 

Cottesloe defeated Mt Lawley/Sorrento 6-0 

Cottesloe proved that they are the team to beat with a clinical win over Mt Lawley/Sorrento. Cottesloe’s Ethan Dunn defeated Casey Ambler 6-3, 6-2 while Will Hann proved too strong for Kendrick Chia 6-1, 7-5. Cottesloe’s Cam Burton and Adam Kehane proved too strong of Josh Carter and Kevin Herbert.

The doubles were also convincing with Hann and Burton winning 6-4, 6-3 and Dunn and Scott Webster winning 6-4, 6-1 against Chia and Herbert.

Cottesloe now hosts Peppermint Grove and gets the double chance while Mt Lawley/Sorrento play Alexander Park on the grass courts of Alexander Park.

 

WOMEN’S 

Hensman Park defeated Dalkeith 4-2 

Hensman Park ended their season with another win but were made to work for it by an impressive Dalkeith side. Alice Stevens returned to Hensman Park and defeated Lauren Nikoloski 6-2, 6-2. Hensman Park’s Anja Dokic and Karin Hiramatsu won their matches against Ali Connell and Charleen Tiwari, but it was Hayley Burton who got Dalkeith’s first rubber defeating Ella Nurkic 6-4, 6-1.

Hayley Burton continued her form alongside Lauren Nikoloski in the doubles and defeated Ella Nurkic and Karin Hiramatsu 6-1, 7-5 but it was a comfortable win for Stevens and Dokic, winning in straight sets over Connell and Partington 6-1, 6-1.

Hensman Park have locked in top spot and take on Royal Kings Park at home while Dalkeith play in a do or die match against Alexander Park.

 

Applecross defeated Royal Kings Park 5-1 

Applecross stood up to the task of getting a home final, upsetting Royal Kings Park at home. The match could have gone either way with three of the six rubbers going to match tie-breaks.

Ruby Broadbent (Applecross) defeated Amy Findlay (Royal Kings Park) 6-4, 7-6 and Sunny Youn came from a set down to beat Jana Ruzic 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. Royal Kings Park’s Amelia Tatafu scored their one win with a three-set win over Jaun Yum 6-4, 3-6, 10-3.

Applecross proved too strong in the double’s rubbers, with both rubbers going their way. Broadbent and Royall were challenged by Royal Kings Park’s Ruzic and Tatafu but won in a match tie-break 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

The win gives Applecross a home elimination final against last year’s premiers Peppermint Grove while Royal Kings Park remain in second spot and take on Hensman Park and get the double chance.

 

Alexander Park defeated Peppermint Grove 3-2 

This match proved to have the biggest shake up on the ladder with Peppermint Grove needing to win to get a home final. Alexander Park had wins in the singles rubbers thanks to Peyton Duckett and Madeleine Watson while Peppermint Grove scored wins with Jessie Culley and Nisha Whittome.

With rubbers and sets equal at the end of singles, it came down to the doubles. Alexander Park’s O’Shea and Watson won their match with ease, defeating Sunkar and Quinn 6-1, 6-0 while the second rubber did not finish due to bad light, but the result was confirmed as Duckett and Church won the first set.

Alexander Park’s win ensured they kept third spot on the ladder and now take on Dalkeith at home while Peppermint Grove will have to travel to Applecross in a do or die matchup.
