Statement from Tennis Australia and its Member Associations regarding recent events at Tennis West

Tennis Australia and its Member Associations have demonstrated over many years a strong commitment to good governance in our sport at international, national, state and community levels. We have worked tirelessly to build governance to best-practice standards.

Tennis Australia has serious concerns relating to governance at Tennis West initiated by a terminated CEO who has taken action against members of the Tennis West Board who voted against his continued employment due to integrity issues. Last weekend the governance breakdown and behaviour within the board escalated to an unacceptable level. Tennis Australia notes the Western Australian Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) will be completing a governance review as part of its provision of future funding to Tennis West. Tennis Australia fully backs this review and supports strong association governance and continuous improvement to best meet the needs of the WA tennis community.

There is nothing more important in our sport than integrity and strong governance and we support President Rod Van’s calling of a Special General Meeting where the Tennis West members will consider resolutions to remove three Directors. The meeting will be held in Perth on 11 January 2024 at which point we are hopeful governance issues are rectified and tennis returns as the focus for Tennis West.
