The participation team has been busy in the months of October and November travelling across the Midwest, Central Wheatbelt, Eastern Districts, South West, Great Southern and Goldfields visiting local schools, delivering activations to tennis clubs for club members and the local community, face to face conversations with affiliated clubs and facilitating coaching workshops and Red Ball Competitions.

The regional trips were aimed at increasing Tennis West’s presence in regional areas to service, support and sustain our sport.

The team travelled to the Eastern Districts towns of Narembeen and Mount Walker in October delivering cardio and junior tennis sessions to both local tennis clubs. Narembeen Tennis Club has over 40 kids participate in a junior activation session. The team also visited Narembeen District High School to deliver school tennis programs to year 7-10 students.

Over the weekend of the 14-15th October, the team helped facilitate the Eastern Districts Tennis Assoc. Junior Camp at Mount Walker Tennis Club which saw 39 kids take part over two days with help from local coaches Keith O’Brien and Brad Basset.

From the 5th to the 10th of November, members of the Tennis West participation team travelled to the Mid West towns of Perenjori, Morawa, Carnamah and Mingenew delivering school activations to over 240 students across the four towns. The team also visited Carnamah Tennis Club with nine adults for an adult coaching session, Morawa Tennis Club with 8 juniors for a junior tennis activation and 10 adults’ cardio tennis, Coorow and Mingenew Tennis Club for adult cardio tennis and Wannamal Tennis Club to 16 adults for cardio tennis and 14 kids for junior tennis activations.

This was followed up by a second trip to the Mid West region in late November to visit the towns of Moora, Dandaragan and Miling. The team visited four schools and delivered tennis activations to over 270 students from Miling Primary School (19 students), Dandaragan Primary School (56 students), St Joseph’s Primary School Moora (116 students) and Central Midlands Senior High School (91 students).

The team also completed on court sessions delivering cardio tennis and junior coaching to Miling Tennis Club to eight juniors, 10 adults to Cardio Tennis and Dandaragan Tennis Club to six juniors.

This week, the participation team as well as Tennis West WA Coach Relationship Manager Nick Jaques travelled to Dumbleyung to a Women’s Coaching Workshop. The workshop was a second installment to the ladies who did the Community Coaching Course in Wagin with Meg Henry and Christina Ladyman.

Apart from the regional roadshows, the team has completed numerous day and overnight trips delivering Red Ball Competitions over term four to country towns north to Geraldton, east to Narrogin and Kalgoorlie and south to Busselton, Margaret River, Collie, Katanning and Tenterden.

Tennis West Head of Tennis Development and Participation Rob Kennedy says the clear focus was for Tennis West to have a greater presence in the regions, offering both physical and financial support to the growth of our sport.

“Off the back of having Tennis West Regional Roadshows in every Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries area for 2022/23, this Spring is just another snippet of the amount of great work the Tennis Development and Participation team are doing across all of WA,” said Rob.

Tennis West Tennis Development Lead – North Samantha Gulliver highlighted the power of sport and how it is able to bring everyone together no matter the distance.

“It gives us great pride and satisfaction to be out on the road in regional WA creating memorable and positive Tennis experiences for people of all ages and abilities, through school programs, cardio sessions, and club activations,” said Sam.

Thank you to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest for their ongoing support of Tennis in Western Australia.
