Round 5 of the Men’s and Women’s State League brought some intense matches, surprising upsets, and standout performances. In the women’s, Applecross won their second match in a row while Hensman Park continued their winning streak. In the men’s Cottesloe extended their lead at the top while Blue Gum Park jumped to second.

MEN’S

Blue Gum Park defeated UWA 4-2 

In a highly competitive matchup between second and third, Blue Gum Park secured a hard-fought victory against UWA. Cameron Fenner and Jay Fairclough delivered outstanding performances in singles, claiming crucial wins for Blue Gum Park. The doubles combinations of Ethan Cook/Archie Brown and Nathan Schupelius/Jay Fairclough further solidified their team’s success, overcoming the challenges posed by UWA’s formidable lineup.

Cottesloe defeated Mt Lawley/Sorrento 5-1 

Cottesloe continued their impressive form in Round 5 with back-to-back wins, dominating Mt Lawley/Sorrento with a convincing victory. Scott Webster, Ethan Dunn, and Will Hann demonstrated their individual brilliance in singles matches, contributing essential points to Cottesloe’s overall score. The doubles combinations of Will Hann/Scott Webster and Adam Kehane/Ethan Dunn showcased the team’s depth and coordination on the court.

Peppermint Grove defeated Alexander Park 4-2 

In a closely contested battle, Peppermint Grove emerged victorious against Alexander Park. Harry Bourchier and Ashwin Sharma led the charge for Alexander Park with impressive wins in singles. This was followed by wins from Peppermint Grove’s Sam Ashenden and Darren Slater. The doubles matches added an extra layer of excitement with the tie in the balance. Both doubles matches went into a third set tie-breaker with the team of Sam Ashenden/Samuel Chapman claiming a hard-fought victory in a thrilling tiebreaker against Austin Vos/Evan Manso, winning 20-18 in the tie-break.

 

WOMEN’S 

Hensman Park defeated Dalkeith 6-0 

Hensman Park showcased their dominance with a resounding victory over Dalkeith to remain two games clear on top of the ladder. Anja Dokic led the charge with a hard-fought singles win, and Ella Nurkic, Ksenija Vujacic, and Pauline Ma continued the winning streak with impressive performances in their respective matches. The doubles combinations of Anja Dokic/Ella Nurkic and Ksenija Vujacic/Pauline Ma secured decisive victories, highlighting Hensman Park’s strength in both singles and doubles play.

Peppermint Grove defeated Alexander Park 5-1 

After consecutive losses, Peppermint Grove emerged victorious against Alexander Park. Jessie Culley showcased resilience in a closely contested singles match, ultimately falling short to Alexander Park’s Peyton Duckett in a thrilling third set tiebreaker. It would be Alexander Park’s only win for the day with the Peppermint Grove duo of Tara Aleksic and Shona Lee delivered dominant performances in both singles and doubles, contributing significantly to their team’s success.

Applecross defeated Royal Kings Park 3-2 

In a closely contested battle, Applecross secured a hard-fought victory over Royal Kings Park, making it two wins on the trot. Rhea Makesar and Ruby Broadbent engaged in a spirited singles match, with Royal Kings Park’s Makesar emerging victorious in a thrilling tiebreaker. Saanvi Tak (RKPTC) and Mahta Khanloo (Applecross) showcased their skills in a closely contested singles match, contributing crucial points for their respective teams. The doubles matchups provided additional excitement, with both teams displaying exceptional teamwork and resilience. The Applecross pairing of Khanloo and Yum in the doubles proved to be the difference with the pair winning in three sets which ultimately decided the final result of the match.
