The Tennis West State League kicked off its highly anticipated 2023/24 season with an electrifying opening round in front of packed Friday night crowds and sunny Saturday afternoons. 

Blue Gum Park defeated Alexander Park 5-1 

In an exhilarating showdown, the Blue Gum Park asserted their dominance, securing a resounding 5-1 victory over Alexander Park The relentless efforts of the Blue Gum Park were highlighted by notable performances, including Aaron Addison’s impressive victory over Ashwin Sharma with a straight-set win of 6-2, 6-4 and Jay Fairclough defeating Alexander Park’s Daniel Downey 7-6, 6-1. 

Peppermint Grove defeated Mt Lawley/Sorrento 3-3 (56 games – 52 games) 

Simultaneously, a fierce battle ensued between Mount Lawley/Sorrento and Peppermint Grove, captivating the audience with an intense back-and-forth exchange. Despite a valiant effort, Mount Lawley/Sorrento fell short, with the tie coming down to games with Peppermint Grove four games ahead. Casey Ambler’s determined display for Mount Lawley/Sorrento couldn’t turn the tide, despite an intense 14-12 triumph over Samuel Chapman in the third set. 

Cottesloe defeated UWA 4-2 

The UWA TC Men’s team displayed resilience but ultimately succumbed to the formidable Cottesloe on the clay courts of UWA Tennis Club. A healthy crowd saw Cottesloe winning 4-2, with standout performances from Will Hann and Ethan Dunn, who showcased their prowess on the court with unwavering determination and precision. 

Tennis fans flocked to Friday night State League fixtures across the city last week. 

The Tennis West Women’s State League commenced its much-anticipated 2023/24 season with an exhilarating display of skill and determination as some of the finest female tennis players took to the courts. The opening round of the league witnessed a series of captivating matches, highlighting the exceptional talent and competitive spirit of the participating teams. 

Hensman Park defeated Royal Kings Park 6-0 

In a stunning showcase of skill and precision, Hensman Park asserted their dominance with a commanding 6-0 victory over Royal Kings Park. The team’s stellar performance was led by a formidable lineup, including standout players such as Alice Stevens, Anja Dokic, and Ksenija Vujacic, each delivering exceptional victories in their respective singles and doubles matches. 

Peppermint Grove defeated Applecross 4-2 

Meanwhile, Peppermint Grove and Applecross engaged in an intense battle that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Despite a resilient effort from an improved Applecross team, Peppermint Grove secured a narrow 4-2 triumph, showcasing their exceptional prowess and teamwork throughout the challenging contest. Applecross took two matches off peppermint Grove with Skye Royall and Sunny Youn winning both their matches in straight sets. Notable performances from top seeds Jessie Culley and Tara Aleksic contributed significantly to Peppermint Grove’s hard-fought victory. 

Alexander Park defeated Dalkeith 6-0 

In another compelling matchup, Alexander Park dominated the courts with an impressive 6-0 victory over Dalkeith Dolphins. Peyton Duckett, Sheridan Currie, Madeleine Watson and Marisa Gianotti led the charge for Alexander Park, demonstrating exceptional resilience and skill in their respective singles and doubles matches, ultimately securing a decisive win for their team. 

As the season progresses, fans eagerly anticipate more high-stakes matches and intense rivalries that will undoubtedly unfold on the courts across the competition. Round 2 sees two more Friday night fixtures while all women’s fixtures will be played in the traditional Saturday timeslot.
