In what is the largest of the country zone playoffs, with more than 200 students from ten South West schools entering 30 teams, the event forms part of the wider SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic series facilitated across regional WA by School Sport WA and Tennis West.

Tennis West Tournament & Competition Operations Coordinator and Tournament Director, Chris Crosby, says the students all played well with a great level of effort throughout the days.

“Watching these games in each region, you can see a high level of sportsmanship, enthusiasm and above all enjoyment from the students who are there to represent themselves and their schools,”

“The country zone playoff event brings students and schools together from different regions, who are all competing for the chance to head to Perth to contest the overall title,’

‘The SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic is a wonderful event which the students, schools and team at Tennis West looks forward to every year.” Crosby said.

The SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic tournament series boasts as the largest participation tennis tournament in Western Australia.

First awarded in 1963, The SunSmart Schools Tennis Classic Academy Plate Country Final, is made possible through the ongoing generosity and support of Healthway and the D’Arcy Slater Foundation and will be held at the State Tennis Centre on Friday 19 March.

The Slazenger Cup stands as Western Australia’s longest running secondary schools competition, with the historic cup dating back to 1913, whilst the Herbert Edward Cup for lower secondary school students was first contested in 1944. The finals of the historic Slazenger Cup (years 7-12) and Herbert Edward Cup (years 7-9) will be played at the State Tennis Centre and Alexander Park Tennis Club.
