Funding from the WA State Government has secured facility upgrades at the Leederville Tennis Club, with the project receiving the green light for the installation of LED lighting and Book-A-Court technology.

With financial commitments also made from the City of Vincent, Tennis Australia’s National Court Rebate Scheme and the club itself, the State Government funding, made available to through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), will help improve the club’s accessibility to members and non-members alike.

Leederville Tennis Club Vice President and Project Lead, Matt Young said the funding contribution from the State Government, City of Vincent and Tennis Australia will improve the club’s accessibility to more people, more of the time, which in turn will help promote improved health and wellbeing benefits for the wider community.

‘Leederville Tennis Club is a wonderful community asset which brings a host of physical and social benefits to the local tennis community and wider City of Vincent residents.’

‘By increasing the club’s accessibility with new LED lighting to six courts, and introducing online court booking with pin pad access technology, we instantly negate a number of barriers such as restricted playing hours and key access.’

‘This funding will allow our club to have a much broader reach within the community, including those who work outside of your typical nine to five hours and for players who prefer more flexibility in their playing commitments,’  Mr Young said.

Applauding the McGowan Government’s continued commitment to the improvement of sporting facilities across WA, Tennis West welcomes the Governments most recent announcement for an additional $130 million to be invested across the state as part of WA’s $5.5 billion Recovery Plan.

The additional funding, which further complements the CSRFF already available to sporting clubs across WA, provides an even greater opportunity for tennis clubs and facilities to improve venues and offerings to be better aligned with the needs of users whose consumption of sport continues to demand improved accessibility and flexibility in offerings.

Tennis West CEO Michael Roberts says the State Government’s commitment to improving and maintaining community sporting facilities is fundamental to the sport’s capacity to impact the physical, social and mental health and wellbeing of individuals and groups across WA.

‘Tennis West applauds the State Government’s continued commitment to improving the infrastructure of sporting facilities across WA,’

‘Participating in sport has a seemingly immeasurable positive effect on the health and wellbeing of communities across WA and improving the infrastructure of the State’s sporting facilities is critical to ensuring clubs are able to keep pace with the changing demands, needs and consumption of sport,’

‘We know that tennis plays a big player in the health and wellbeing of our communities with studies proving a positive correlation between tennis players and extended life expectancy,’* Mr Roberts said.

Minister Sport and Recreation the Hon Mick Murray MLA says the State Government’s commitment to improving community sporting and recreation facility across the state showcases the Government’s priority for improving the health and wellbeing of all West Australians.

‘The Government’s recent announcement for an added $130 million towards the improvement of sporting facilities across WA, is in addition to the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, and acts to further exemplify the Western Australian Government’s commitment to the development of sustainable infrastructure for sport and recreation across the State,’

‘The purpose of the CSRFF is to provide financial assistance to community groups and local governments to develop basic infrastructure for sport and recreation which aims to maintain or increase participation in sport and recreation with an emphasis on physical activity, through rational development of good quality, well-designed and well-utilised facilities,’ Mr Murray said.

The project is set to commence in the coming months and will begin with the installation of the lights followed by the Book-a-Court installation set for later in the year.
