Yajat Sharma holds the Hopman Cup Trophy (standing with the Cup, top left) as part of Bertram Primary School’s court resurfacing celebration made possible through Tennis Australia’s National Court Rebate (NCR) scheme and joint fundraising efforts from the school community, local business and the Coles Community Challenge.

Tennis fanatic Yajat Sharma from Bertram Primary School couldn’t believe his luck on Tuesday the 4th of December when he held the internationally contested Mastercard Hopman Cup. The Hopman Cup Trophy was on show at Bertram Primary School in celebration of the schools court resurfacing project.

The resurfacing of the multi-purpose, 8 Hot Shot tennis courts was made possible by an $8000 grant from Tennis Australia under the National Court Rebate (NCR) scheme and joint fundraising efforts from the school community, local business support and a $2000 donation from the local Coles store through the Coles Community Challenge.

The young hot shot who trains and plays with Kwinana Tennis Club, was handed the white gloves after answering a series of questions regarding the Mastercard Hopman Cup. “It was a like a dream come true” said Yajat who was introduced to tennis by his parents. “I wanted to play cricket but my parents thought tennis was a better choice. I’ve been playing for five years now and I really love it”.

12 year old Yajat plays of a Sunday morning in the junior Fast4 competition playing in both singles and doubles matches. Fast4 games are a quicker, modified version of the game that allows for skill development whilst building a love of the game. And that has certainly been the case for young star Yajat who loves tennis for the fun of the game that he enjoys playing with his friends.

Yajat looks up to world number one Novak Djokovic and now that he’s held the Hopman Cup Trophy, dreams of one day meeting Djokovic; alongside other legends of the game Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Tennis West would like to thank Member for Baldivis, Mr Reece Whitby MLA for his involvement in the resurfacing project. Tennis West would also like to thank Bertram Primary School for their ongoing support of tennis in schools and their commitment to fundraising efforts.
