Fast serves, quick volleys and some great cultural awareness were exchanged at Cottesloe Tennis Club this week as Christ Church Grammar School’s Corr Cup First VIII tennis team played a “friendly” with Clontarf College athletes.

Indigenous boys from as far as the “Western” desert, Kununurra, Port Hedland, Kalgoorlie and Moora, had tremendous fun and a lot of laughs when they teamed up with the “Western” Suburbs players in doubles. Christ Church boys thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and  generously donated their racquets at the end of the match to Clontarf to help with its tennis program.

The event organised by the Murlpirrmarra Connection’s Darren Patten and Christ Church parent Warren Harding, was kindly hosted by Cottesloe Tennis Club, who provided courts, balls and a sausage sizzle.  The event was a success through the support of Club President Phil Barron, Ian Hutton, Dave and Georgia Culley, Christ Church Grammar School, players and parents.

Tennis Coach Rob Kilderry also ran a tennis clinic on serving and noted the enthusiasm of the boys to learn .

It was 46 years ago that Australia’s Evonne Goolagong -Cawley won the French Open and went on to become World #1.

Tennis is a sport which caters for all ages and backgrounds and hopefully this will be an annual event and help to inspire a future generation of champions.
