In a coup for WA tennis, five West Australian finalists have been named across the fifteen award categories at the 2016 Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards, to be held in Melbourne on Monday 28 November.

 

Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said the Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards celebrated all levels of achievement within the tennis community.

 

“Along with honouring our most outstanding professional players, these awards celebrate and recognise the exceptional accomplishments of tennis communities, coaches, clubs and schools around the country,” he said.

 

Last year’s Australian Open wildcard winner, Maddison Inglis (WA) is nominated in the Female Junior Athlete of the Year category, which recognises a player 18 years and under who has achieved a commendable ranking in their age group and has demonstrated a record of playing for Australia in teams events.  Inglis continues to climb the WTA rankings whilst playing the Pro Tour Events domestically and internationally. She has represented Australia on numerous occasions most recently as the ‘Orange Girl’ with the Australian Fed Cup Team.

 

Iglis faces some tough competition in Kimberley Birrell (QLD), Jaimee Fourlis (VIC) and Priscilla Hon (Qld), but is delighted to be nominated for such a prestigious award.

 

“I am so excited to be nominated for this award. I have a lot of respect for the other nominees, and after a great year of tennis, I’m really honoured to be standing alongside them as a finalist” Inglis said.

 

Laurie Apps, President of the Fremantle Lawn Tennis club has been named as a finalist in the Volunteer Achievement Award category after serving on the management committee of the club as President and Vice-President for over ten years. Laurie has also been the driving force behind the Fremantle Park Redevelopment Project since 2006, and is responsible for the management of the entire tennis facility.

 

Mayor of the City of Fremantle, Dr Brad Pettit endorses the nomination of Mr Apps for this prestigious award.

 

“Laurie has worked tirelessly for the Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club and its members, while at the same time putting his substantial talents to work for the whole community in his role as Convener of the Joint Working Group for the Fremantle Park Redevelopment Project” Dr Pettit said.

 

Matthew Holmes, Head Coach at Reabold Tennis Club was named as a finalist in the Coaching Excellence – Club Award for the high level of junior development at Reabold and the larger community, with a total of 1,486 coaching participants in the last financial year across a variety of programs, including ANZ Tennis Hot Shots, private lessons, Talent ID squads, High Performance programs, FitBit Cardio Tennis, ladies coaching, beginner classes and school holiday clinics.

 

Wembley Primary School is among 3 schools nominated in the Most Outstanding School category for their commitment to providing their students with an opportunity to play tennis at school as well as provide links to their local club. Every term the school offers a “Before-school tennis program” in conjunction with the Floreat Tennis Club. Through the efforts of both parties, the school has had impressive results in attracting students to the sport, with a 400% increase in attendance at this before-school program, with 235 students now attending.

 

Representing country WA, the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Easter Open is a finalist in the Most Outstanding Australian Ranking Tournament category, which recognises events that have offered a complete package of on- and off-court activities and player amenities to a high standard allowing for a positive tournament atmosphere. 

 

Tournament Director Rick Arthur, is delighted for the tournament to be recognised as one of the best in Australia.

 

“This tournament continues to go from strength to strength and is widely regarded as the best amongst the playing group, which is evident with the record numbers that entered the AMT Men’s and Ladies Singles this year. The club is so proud of our tournament, and it’s fantastic to be recognised for our efforts with this nomination” Arthur said.

 

The seventh edition of the Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards will take place at Crown Palladium in Melbourne on Monday 28 November 2016.

 

Dylan Alcott, Daria Gavrilova, John Millman, John Peers, Sam Stosur and Jordan Thompson have been nominated for Newcombe Medal 2016.
