9 June 2016 | Tennis West

From the 13th – 22nd of May, 180 athletes competed in the back-to-back Perth Platinum and WA Open tournaments for their chance to follow in the footsteps of previous winners, and Australian Tennis Legends Lleyton Hewitt, Frank Sedgman, Harry Hopman, Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court.

The swing attracted some of Australia’s best players including Australian No. 36, Max Purcell, Darren Polkinghorne (45), Catherine Krueger (51), and WA’s own Zach Itzstein (50).

The tournaments aligned perfectly with the Northern Hemisphere’s “Spring Break”, thereby enticing many of the young West Aussie’s who have chosen the American Collegiate path back to their home State, making for a nostalgic, friendly tournament series.

Polkinghorne and Purcell faced off in both Finals resulting in a win each way.

WA local’s Scott Jones and Joel Pleydell teamed up to win the Perth Platinum Doubles Final.

The WA Open Men’s Doubles was also won by Jones, but this time with Polkinghorne as his partner.

Victoria’s Alana Parnaby blew the competition out of the water, taking both Women’s Singles titles. However, her opponent in the WA Open Final, Karis Ryan didn’t hold a grudge, pairing up with Parnaby to take out the WA Open Women’s Doubles Event.
