National Academy Perth athletes Maddison Inglis and Tristan Schoolkate have lead a successful Western Australian National championships campaign during the December Showdown held in Melbourne.

After the disappointment of narrowly missing out on an Australian Open Wildcard losing in the final of the girls 18’s Australian Championships; Inglis showed her hunger to compete, and bounced back to win the Women’s Australian Open Wildcard Event and secure a main draw position alongside the world’s best players at the Australian Open to be played this month.

Schoolkate, the tournament’s top seed in the boys 14/under event produced some of his best tennis to make the final, but eventually lost to Victorian Ken Cavrak in a high quality, big-hitting final 6-4 6-2. Schoolkate then partnered Cavrak to win the boys 14/under doubles final. With this win, Schoolkate has won both the 12/under and 14/under national doubles titles.

In other events, Talent Development Squad member Lauren Nikoloski produced her best performance of the year placing fifth in the girl’s 12/under event. Nikoloski demonstrated her competitive spirit losing to only the eventual winner Lara Walker of Queensland in the quarter finals.

In the girl’s 14/u event Tennis West squad member, Tara Gilich used her athletic attributes to produce her strongest Australian Championship result, finishing seventh.

In addition to the on-court results, three Western Australian players demonstrated the National Academy Values (Compete, Commit and Respect) and won awards. Each day, a player was selected on the basis that they demonstrated positive behaviours that reflect the academy values. Congratulation to William Hann on winning the Commit Award and Tristan Schoolkate and Derek Pham on winning the respect award.

Finally, Congratulation to all 40 Western Austalian athletes that participated in the Australian Championships.
