26 March 2013 | Tennis West

The 2013 WA Women in Tennis Foundation Cup & D’Arcy Slater teams competed in a National Foundation Cup Team Challenge in Sydney in January 2013. The event was a fantastic experience for the team and managers and well run by the Fed Cup Foundation. The event was also supported by Tennis Australia. The WA Team competed against NSW, QLD, SA, VIC and TAS.

The WA athletes were Madelaine Muller Hughes (South West), Mirrante Ryder (South West), Rhiannon Ryder (South West), Tsige Lacey (Central Districts), Kevin Banwell (South West), Mitchell Fraser (South West), Max Munro (South West) and Angus Campbell (South West). Tennis Managers were Paul Oldfield and Brooke Koenig, from Tennis West.

The event was in a team’s format, whereby each player played singles and doubles against each state. Overall the event went for an extra day than previous years and included a mixed doubles competition, which was a lot of fun. The WA team fought hard, but the competition was tough and WA finish 5th in both the boys and girls events.

The team went to watch the professional players at the Apia International played at Sydney Olympic Park, which was a great experience. On the final day of the event, all teams were presented on Centre Court at the Apia International which was a special opportunity.

Thank you to the WA Women in Tennis Committee and the D’Arcy Slater Foundation for the generous sponsorship of the regional events and interstate challenge.
