Congratulations to Peter Cunningham from Burden Park Tennis Club who has been hailed our May Community Champion of the Month! For more than 25 years, Peter has been the heart and soul of Burden Park Tennis club, dedicating countless hours to ensure it thrives. As Club Secretary, Peter manages all the administrative work, coordinates competitions, oversees maintenance of the clubhouse and courts, and even handles the bills, all while ensuring the club remains welcoming and in top condition. It’s not unusual to see Peter visiting the club every day, simply to check that everything is running smoothly.
Peter also plays a vital role in maintaining strong relationships with the local council, Tennis Victoria, and the Springvale RSL. He regularly meets with these groups to update them on the club’s operations, seek advice, and look for opportunities to improve the experience for all their members. Thanks to Peter’s initiative, the club supports the Springvale RSL by selling raffle tickets, and has worked closely with the council to present a vision and plan for the future.
Burden Park Tennis Club is proudly multicultural, representing over 20 different nationalities. Peter and the committee are committed to creating an inclusive environment, participating in important events such as Anzac Day ceremonies and organising Open Days to welcome new members. Under Peter’s leadership, the club also introduced a can collection initiative, so far raising and donating over $1,000 to local community groups.
Thanks to Peter, the club has seen a significant increase in membership, more coaching activity, and a growing number of juniors joining, which is a testament to his tireless work, and the club’s collective efforts to hire a new coach and grow.
Peter’s passion, commitment, and community spirit have been instrumental to the club’s success, and we are proud to recognise him as our Community Champion of the Month for May!
