Introducing the Sustainable Regional Tennis Project
There are a million reasons to grow tennis regionally, and through a multi-year commitment in collaboration with Tennis Australia and the Victorian Government, this project will provide essential support to the people and clubs that keep the sport thriving.
The Sustainable Regional Tennis project represents an unprecedented investment in regional communities. Made possible through funding from the Victorian Government and Tennis Australia, this project will provide vital resources and support to the people behind regional tennis. By strengthening the foundation of tennis across Victoria, this initiative will ensure long-term growth, increased participation, and a brighter future for regional clubs.
For a snapshot of the project, check out our One-Page Project Overview.

Why This Project Was Founded
We know that the viability of regional tennis impacts the sport as a whole. When regional clubs thrive, so does the sport at every level, including the metro areas. It’s crucial that regional tennis clubs and programs receive the support they need to keep growing and succeed. This project has been established to provide additional resources and funding to ensure that these communities have the tools they need to continue thriving.
While having world-class facilities and programs is important, the people behind the scenes – the coaches, community leaders, and volunteers – are what truly drive the success of these clubs. By investing in the people facilitating our game, we’re ensuring that tennis can continue to flourish in all corners of Victoria.
Addressing the Coaching Disparity
One of the key challenges facing regional tennis is the disparity in coaching resources. Our Fact Sheet highlights the stark contrast between the number of regional clubs and the coaches available to support them. While regional clubs make up a significant portion of the tennis landscape, only 31% of these clubs have a coach, compared to metro areas where coaching resources are more accessible.
The need for qualified coaches is clear, and this project aims to address this gap by focusing on providing support and training to coaches in regional areas. By empowering these coaches, we’re giving them the tools to build sustainable tennis programs that will benefit players for years to come.

Our Vision for the Future
Through this project, we aim to:
- Support coaches and community champions by providing additional funding, networking and development opportunities
- Expand participation across all ages by ensuring that regional clubs have access to high-quality coaching and programs and increasing coaching availability
- Build stronger more sustainable communities by investing in the people who are dedicated to growing the sport at a grassroots level
- Create clear pathways from player to coach, official or administrator
With these efforts, we hope to see regional tennis clubs thrive in the years to come. For a visual breakdown of our expected outcomes and success metrics, take a look at our Infographic on Success.
