Daria Gavrilova advanced to the second round of the China Open with a straight-sets win over Christina McHale on Monday.
Gavrilova beat the American 6-4 6-4 to set up a second-round showdown with 12th seed Timea Bacsinszky.
Despite dishing up four double faults, the Aussie was nonetheless able to secure victory in 86 minutes.
Bacsinszky, of Switzerland, overcame recent Seoul champion Lara Arruabarrena in three sets.
Gavrilova, the world No.49, beat Bacsinszky in their only prior meeting in Rome 2015.
Fellow Australian John Millman was not so fortunate, falling in three sets to Roberto Bautista Agut in the concurrent ATP event.
Millman, a qualifier, battled for two hours, 17 minutes before eventually going down to the No.7 seed 6-4 3-6 6-3.
