Sam Stosur’s eight-match winning streak has come to an end with a semifinal loss in Washington DC to Sloane Stephens.

Stosur, who won three matches to progress to the final four at the Citi Open after having won the WTA title in Bad Gastein, fell 7-6(4) 6-0.

Stephens’ win sends her through to her first ever WTA final and was her first victory over Stosur in three career meetings.

The Australian, seeded No.2 in the American capital, was left ruing her missed chances in the first set.

She scored an early break to build a 3-1 lead and also lead in the ensuing tiebreak before Stephens came storming back.

The 35th-ranked Stephens then steamrolled through the second set while Stosur’s forehand broke down, gifting the American a rash of errors.

Stephens will face Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final on Sunday.
