Bernard Tomic has come back from the loss of the first set to advance to the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event in Acapulco, Mexico.

The Australian won 4-6 6-3 6-2 over eighth seed Benjamin Becker and will next face No.2 seed David Ferrer, who overcame another Aussie in Marinko Matosevic.

Matosevic had his chances throughout the one-hour, 43-minute contest, leading 5-3 in the opening set and recovering from an early break down in the second set to level scores at 3-3.

But Ferrer, coming off the title at last week’s Rio Open, proved too strong, prevailing 7-6(3) 6-4.

Earlier, Tomic slammed 13 aces en route to the win over Becker in one hour and 18 minutes.

With scores locked at 3-3 in the second set, the Queenslander reeled off nine of the next 11 games; he broke serve early in the third set to establish the ascendancy.

It sends Tomic into already his fifth quarterfinal of the season, after reaching the last eight in Brisbane, Sydney, Memphis and Delray Beach.

At Delray Beach, he went on to reach the semifinals.

He also made the second week at the Australian Open in a fourth round finish; his 2015 win-loss record currently stands at an impressive 14-5.
