Casey Dellacqua has fallen in a hard-fought quarterfinal to Garbine Muguruza at the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

The Australian won the first set and served for the match in the second, but eventually succumbed 3-6 7-6(5) 6-3 in just under two hours.

Muguruza had upset Jelena Jankovic en route to the last eight and is now through to the semifinals where she will face the winner of the match between No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki and Carla Suarez Navarro, the eighth seed.

Dellacqua served strongly – she produced seven aces to just one double fault, while Muguruza committed 10 double faults – but once the Spaniard found some more consistency as the match wore on, she stormed to the finish line.

It was nonetheless an impressive tournament for the world No.30 Dellacqua, who upset 2013 Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki before going on to reach just the second WTA Premier-level quarterfinal of her career.
