The US Open’s most endangered species, otherwise known as the “female seed” was dealt another blow with Ekaterina Makarova toppling two-time Australian Open champ and former No.1 Victoria Azarenka. Admittedly Makarova is seeded 17th to Azarenka’s 16th, so it’s not an upset on paper, but it still feels like the women’s draw has lost yet another star.
