Marinko Matosevic has ousted Nicolas Mahut to advance to the second round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters on Monday.

The Australian beat Mahut 6-4 7-6(4) in just shy of two hours to set up a meeting with 11th seed John Isner of the United States.

Matosevic, a qualifier into the draw and currently ranked No.89, served five aces and saved all six break points he faced against the Frenchman.

His compatriot Bernard Tomic was not so lucky, falling in straight sets to another Frenchman in Gilles Simon.

Tomic, also a qualifier, went down 6-3 6-2 in exactly an hour.

Simon, a former world No.6, served up 10 aces during the win which moves him through to a second-round meeting with top seed Novak Djokovic.
