Australian Sam Groth has upended No.5 seed Donald Young in the opening round of the ATP Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.
Groth beat the American 7-6(7) 6-2 to set up a second round meeting with Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri at the 250-level grasscourt event.
Groth’s compatriot and doubles partner Matt Ebden fell 6-2 7-5 in his first round match against American Rajeev Ram.
Joining them in the main draw was Luke Saville, the young Aussie who qualified thanks to two comprehensive victories.
Both he and fellow South Australian Lleyton Hewitt, the tournament’s third seed, will take part in first round action on Tuesday.
