Jarmila Gajdosova has reached the US Open second round following a 7-6(5) 7-5 win over the Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova at Flushing Meadows.

The 29th seeded Gajdosova stopped a run of six straight defeats by grinding out a two-set win over Benesova.

The result set up a clash with American world No.103 Vania King for a possible third round encounter against world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki.

“It wasn’t great but I am just glad to win my first match in a while and to be in the second round,” Gajdosova said.

“I did not play very well but I played good when I needed to I guess. I got out of jail a few times.”

Earlier, Australian wildcard Casey Dellacqua was bundled out in the first round of the US Open by Alize Cornet.

The Frenchwoman accounted for the West Australian 7-5 6-0 in one hour and 11 minutes at Flushing Meadows.
