Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova booked a spot in the second round of the WTA Charleston tournament by defeating Zuzana Ondraskova on Monday.

The 28-year-old recovered from losing the first set against the Czech Republic player to claim a 4-6 6-1 6-2 first round win.

Rodionova will next play the winner of all-Czech match between Andrea Hlavackova and 15th seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova scheduled for Tuesday.

Defending champion Sam Stosur has been given a first round bye at the tournament but fellow Australian Jelena Dokic will hit the court on Tuesday when she takes on Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili.

In other first round action on Monday, South African Chanelle Scheepers surprised 13th seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 6-4 6-4.

American Vania King beat No.16 seed Verna Dushevina 6-4 7-6(7) and Jill Craybas defeated fellow American Shelby Rogers 3-6 6-2 6-0 to reach the second round.

Chinese 11th seed Peng Shuai trounced American qualifier Sloan Stephens 6-2 6-1, No.12 seed Julia Goerges scored a 7-6 6-4 victory over Olga Govortsova and 14th-seeded Bethanie Mattek-Sands beat qualifier Alexandra Stevenson 6-2 6-1.
