Fourteen-year-old Queenslander Ashleigh Barty has come from one set behind to knock out fellow qualifier Bojana Bobusic of Western Australia in a tense first-round match, 4-6 6-3 6-3 in her opening match of the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis International.
Barty will be joined in the next round by rising Australian star and third-seeded Melburnian Olivia Rogowska who enjoyed a confident victory.
The Commonwealth Games silver medallist only conceded two games as she defeated local wildcard Daniela Scivetti in straight sets and will now meet fellow 19-year-old Gail Brodsky (USA) in the second round.
In other results on day three, former British No.1 Katie O’Brien overcame Japan’s Erika Takao in a tough three-set contest while young qualifier Rachel Tredoux of Queensland was no match for Korea’s No.3 ranked player Ye-Ra Lee.
Japan’s Kumiko Iijima, the top seed, was also impressive in the first round and will now face Australia’s Alison Bai in her next match.
Second-round matches will commence on Thursday, with seven Australians including Rogowska and Barty in contention for a place in the quarterfinals.
