Victorian Andrew Whittington has ousted top seed Tsung-Hua Yang 7-5 2-6 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Mildura Grand International today.
Whittington, who received a wildcard into the main draw, scored his second consecutive three-set win to reach the final eight.
Fellow Victorian James Lemke (Camberwell, Vic) also cruised into the quarterfinals after a comfortable 6-4 6-0 win over qualifier Marious Zelba (Rosebery, NSW).
In the women’s draw, 14-year-old wild card, Ashleigh Barty (Springfield, Qld), has progressed to the quarterfinals after her opponent Shayna McDowell (Tanawah, Qld) retired with an abdominal strain – 5-1Ret.
Qualifier Daniella Dominikovic (Blakehurst,NSW) ended the winning streak of Commonwealth Games silver medallist Olivia Rogowska (St. Kilda, Vic) with a second round straight sets 7-5 7-6(5) win.
Friday’s quarterfinals will showcase some great Australian talent. In the men’s draw Whittington will take on the No. 8 seed Michael Look (Scarborough, WA) and Issac Frost (Townsville, Qld) will play Hiroki Moriya of Japan.
Barty will headline the women’s action when she meets Gail Brodsky of the United States, and there will be an all Australian quarterfinal when Optus 18s National Champion, Isabella Holland (St. Lucia, Qld) meets Dominikovic.
