The last Australian singles player at Medibank International Sydney 2011 bowed out when teenager Bernard Tomic lost his rain-interrupted opening round match.

Tomic’s match against Alexandr Dolgopolov had been locked at a set apiece when play was halted on Tuesday night but the Ukrainian quickly wrapped up the match, 6-7 (7-3) 6-1 6-2 on Wednesday morning.

Tomic, who battled through qualifying to get a start in Sydney, does at least have a wildcard for the Australian Open next week.

Dolgopolov will go on to play big-serving American Sam Querrey in a second round match later on Wednesday.

Former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro plays Florian Mayer on Wednesday afternoon while Kim Clijsters plays in keenly-awaited opening night match against Victoria Azarenka.
