Top seed Chase Ferguson powered into the semifinals of the Gallipoli Youth Cup after overcoming Connor Di Marco in straight sets.

Ferguson booked his place in the final four by beating his compatriot Di Marco 6-4 6-1 at Melbourne Park, whilst third seed Campbell Salmon saw off Junior Davis Cup player Ken Cavrak to progress to the semifinals.

Ferguson will face Cavrak’s Junior Davis Cup team-mate Rinky Hijikata in the semifinals after he beat Jayden Court 6-0 4-6 6-4, whilst Salmon will meet the winner of the match between Cihan Akay and Thomas Bosancic.

In the girls’ competition, Tina Nadine Smith came from a set down to beat top seed Lisa Mays 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Her opponent in the semifinals will be New Zealander Valentina Ivanov, who defeated fourth seed Amber Marshall in straight sets.

The other semifinal will feature third seed Ivana Popovic against Oleksandra Kalachova, who is seeded second, after their respective victories over Megan Smith and Isabelle Papazyan.

The Gallipoli Youth Cup, which is this year celebrating its tenth anniversary edition, is the world’s only international junior tennis tournament held in commemoration of the soldiers who lost their lives at Gallipoli.

The boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles finals will be played on Friday, starting at 10am.
