Australia have secured their place in the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals in style, beating Uzbekistan in Thursday’s play-off to ensure at least a top four finish in the Asia / Oceania Final Qualifying event.
With four teams from the qualifier progressing to the finals, Australia’s 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in New Delhi was good enough to clinch a place in September’s showpiece event in Hungary.
Stefan Storch (Vic) comfortably beat Azamat Lukmanov 6-2 6-2 in the opening rubber, before Rinky Hijikata (NSW) maintained his unbeaten record with a hard-fought 7-6(3) 6-4 victory over Sergey Fomin.
With Australia having built an unassailable 2-0 lead, the doubles rubber was rendered redundant.
Australia will now face China on Friday before a meeting with either Chinese Taipei or Japan on Saturday, with the results of those matches helping to determine the seedings for the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals, which will feature 16 teams.
