Top seed John Isner has ended the run of Australian Marinko Matosevic at the ATP event in Atlanta.

Isner, of the United States, won the pair’s quarterfinal match on Friday 7-6(8) 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes.

Matosevic, playing in his fifth quarterfinal of 2014, started strongly in the hot conditions in Atlanta, scoring an early break en route to a 2-0 lead.

But when Isner broke straight back and levelled at 2-2, the set ultimately progressed to a tiebreak; there, the world No.52 double faulted to hand Isner the set.

Isner’s serve, meanwhile, was typically damaging, his 17th ace sealing victory.

He moves through to a semifinal showdown with compatriot Jack Sock.
