Australia’s Marinko Matosevic has progressed to the third round of the ATP Canada Masters event in Montreal after opponent Tommy Haas retired.

Matosevic was leading the No.10 seed 5-0 before Haas pulled the pin after 19 minutes due to a right shoulder injury.

The injury-prone German has made a spectacular return to form in the past 18 months, surging from outside the top 200 to his current mark of No.12 at age 35.

Matosevic will play Frenchman Benoit Paire for a place in the quarterfinals in Montreal; Paire upset eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets.
