Sam Stosur has breezed into the quarterfinals of the WTA Southern California Open with a decisive 6-4 6-1 victory over Sesil Karatantcheva.

The Australian, seeded fifth, found herself locked in a battle in the first set at 4-4 before breaking serve on her way to pocketing the opener.

From there, it was one way traffic as she dismantled her Kazakh opponent, breaking early in the second set and romping to victory in one hour and 12 minutes.

Unusually, Stosur struck no aces, but her serve was solid throughout the match.

This was unlike Karatantcheva’s delivery, which produced an unsightly 13 double faults and saw her fail to win less than half of points on her first serve.

Stosur progressed to the quarterfinals of the WTA Premier event, where she will face the winner of the match between second seed Agnieszka Radwanska and Daniela Hantuchova.
