Australia’s junior contingent has started strongly at The Championships with two out of three making it through to the second round on the opening day of play.

Thanasi Kokkinakis pulled off a solid 6-3 6-3 straight-sets win over 16th seed Wayne Montgomery of South Africa. Kokkinakis, who was a finalist at the Australian Open boys’ event earlier this year, has just returned to competition following back stress fractures. Kokkinakis will face the winner out of Daniel Windahl and Peter Ashley in the second round.

Kokkinakis was joined by Brad Mousley who defeated local Alexander Sendegeya 6-2 6-4 and will meet either 15th seed Frederico Ferreira Silva or Enzo Couacaud in the second round.

In the girls’ singles event, Sara Tomic was defeated by 13th seed Anett Kontaveit 6-1 6-0.

Still to play their first-round matches are top seed Nick Kyrgios, qualifier Jay Andrijic and Harry Bourchier. Kyrgios is due to face Great Britain’s Evan Hoyt, Andrijic is taking on Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and Bourchier will play Great Britain’s Julian Cash.

Aussie qualifier Lizette Cabrera will take on 16th seed Ipek Soylu in her opening match in the girls’ event.

There is no play on Sunday; matches will resume on Monday.
