It was a a mixed day for the Australian boys’ and girls’ teams on the first day of the 2012 ITF World Junior Tennis Finals taking place in Prostejov, Czech Republic.

Australia’s third-seeded girls’ team of Priscilla Hon (Rochedale), Sara Tomic (Gold Coast) and Kimberly Birrell (Hope Island), which is captained by National Academy Brisbane coach Anthony Richardson, enjoyed a 2-1 victory over Russia in their first Group B round-robin tie.

For the boys’ team of Oliver Anderson (Yeronga, Qld), Brian Tran (Greystanes, NSW) Max Purcell (Belrose, NSW) and National Academy Sydney coach Jarrad Bunt, the opening day finished with a 2-1 loss to Germany.

Next up the girls will take on the unseeded Argentinean team, while the boys will face fourth seeds Brazil.

The World Junior Tennis finals consists of 16 boys and 16 girls teams in the 14-and-under age group. The teams are split into four groups of four teams, with the top team from each group progressing to the semifinals. A total of 176 teams from 94 countries have taken part in this year’s event.
