The winners of the 2012 Optus 12s and 14s National Grasscourt Championships were decided yesterday at the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club in Victoria.

[3] Matthew Romios (Pascoe Vale South, Vic) was crowned the winner of the 12s boys’ championships having defeated [2] Kody Pearson (Panania, NSW) in the semifinals before upsetting No.1 seed Benard Nkomba (Yagoona, NSW) 6-2 7-6(4) in Sunday’s final.

Top seed Jaimee Fourlis (Preston, Vic) took out the 12s girls’ title over Victorian [3] Vivian Fidantsis (Chelsea Heights, Vic) 6-2 6-1.

The Optus 14s National Grasscourt Championships saw No.1 seed Brian Tran (Greystanes, NSW) take victory in the boys’ draw. Tran came back from a second set loss to defeat [3] Scott Jones (Carramar, WA) 6-2 3-6 6-4. Jones put up an impressive effort to overcome No.2 seed Jack Lyttle (Hillarys, WA) in the semis the day before winning 7-6(6) 1-6 6-4.

In the girls’ event, No.2 seed Olivia Tjandramulia (Rockhampton, Qld) defeated [3] Chloe Hule (Morphett Vale, SA) in two sets 7-6(2) 6-2. Hule had upset top seed Sara Tomic (Southport, Qld)  in the previous round 3-6 6-4 6-4 but was unable to hold onto her winning streak in the final.

This year was the second year the 2012 Optus 12s and 14s National Grasscourt Championships took place alongside the Mildura Grand International, a prominent event on the Australian Pro Tour calendar.

The next big event on the Optus Junior Tour calendar is the 2012 Optus 12s, 14s and 16s National Claycourt Championships taking place in Ipswich, Queensland from 28 March.
