Top seed Kumiko Iijima (JPN) has bowed out of the Sydney Olympic Park International after being upset by Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) in today’s quarterfinals.
Webley-Smith was untroubled by Iijima as she powered to a straight sets victory, 6-1 6-3.
In other matches, it was an unlucky day for the remaining Australians in the draw with all three players unable to progress to the semifinals.
14 year-old qualifier Ashleigh Barty (Springfield, Qld) produced a mature display against No.7 seed Rika Fujiwara (JPN) but could not overcome the world No.304, who will now meet Webley-Smith in the semifinals.
Shannon Golds (Carrara, Qld) won the second set in her quarterfinal against Gail Brodsky (USA) but the American fought back in the final set to book her place in the final four of the tournament.
Brodsky is set to face Yurika Sema (JPN), who defeated wildcard and local hope Daniella Dominikovic (Blakehurst, NSW) in straight sets.
