The Women’s finals remained tightly contested, with the intensity lasting right through to the deciding singles. Doubles were a gruelling battle lasting 3 hours 20 minutes, with both teams delivering some excellent tennis. The tension carried through the next two singles, leaving the last matches to decide the outcome. It was a battle of endurance and technique, as the players pushed through all the rubbers. Beaumaris Lawn fought hard until the very end but ultimately Kooyong Lawn’s women clinched the title (with a win to Kooyong Lawn’s Louise Field) to give the Club a 4-6-64 victory over Beaumaris Lawn Tennis Club, who finished with 2-6-60.
Reflecting on those tough matches, Jasmin Starr from Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club congratulated her team and mentioned “riding a high, but we were a bit worried towards the end, it was really close. Thank you to the team, it’s such a pleasure to play with you all, well done today!”
Kooyong’s Women’s team has now won three State Grade Finals in a row, and they’re determined to keep this momentum going in the years ahead!
The Men’s finals proved to be just as electrifying, with both teams bringing the energy on court and off with great team spirit heard from spectators and teammates alike. As the Get Set Tennis commentators, Nelson and Reza stated at the end of Kooyong Lawn’s Thomas Patton’s hard-fought victory over Chanchai Sookton-Eng: “I don’t know if I have enough emotional energy to handle it, that was a roller coaster.”
In the end it was Kooyong Lawn who defeated Fawkner 3-7-62 to 2-3-42. David Bidmeade, Kooyong Lawn’s captain, praised the great camaraderie and friendly atmosphere between the two clubs and said, “this is like a Davis Cup battle, this is awesome. Everyone’s getting into every point. This is what we play for, this is what makes competition special.”
Thomas Patton particularly praised the spirit within the team and the impact it has on every player. “It’s a great group of lads that we have, we’ve been playing with them for years, super fun. So I think when the boys come together, we find another gear and the thing we never get in tennis is that it’s an individual sport, so when I’m out here playing, it’s so much more fun to be with the team… I think the intensity and the level both increase”. With the men’s locked away, Kooyong saw an impressive double victory for the second year in a row.
The excitement wasn’t limited to State Grade. The Grade 1 Grand Final teams also put on a spectacular display of tennis. In the Men’s Grade 1 competition, Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club again claimed the title 3-2. On the Women’s side, Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club 4-2 with every team showing great determination until the very end.
