The 2016 Tennis Victoria Premier League continued on Wednesday evening with Grace Park Hawthorn leading the men’s competition and Mornington Tennis Centre narrowly on top in the women’s league after round 3.

Andrew Whittington, fresh from winning both Mornington Peninsula Tennis International events, continued his winning form on clay leading the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club to a 5 rubber to 1 victory over Bundoora Tennis Club to place Kooyong second on the ladder. Defending champions and current ladder leaders Grace Park Hawthorn enjoyed a 6 rubber to 0 victory over home team Royal South Yarra.

At Dendy Park it was a showdown between women’s teams Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and Liston Tennis Club. Prior to the season, both teams were expected to make finals and their first match-up didn’t disappoint. Both doubles matches went the distance with Monika Rajicic winning in 3 sets in the final singles to clinch the victory for Liston and put them one step closer to a finals birth.

The match of the round saw Cassandra Moraleja from Royal South Yarra defeat Dendy Park’s Bojana Bobusic 13 11 in the 3rd set tiebreak to record her first win for the Tennis Victoria Premier League season.

This weekend will see a double header with the men heading to Grace Park on Saturday and Bundoora on Sunday. The Country All Stars will look to remain in finals contention as they take on Bundoora Saturday and Grace Park Hawthorn Sunday.

Mornington (19 points) now hold a slender lead over Liston (18 points) and MCC Tennis Section (16 points) who all sit on two wins-a-piece.

The Tennis Victoria Premier League continues this weekend with a double-header. Predicted grand finalist’s Grace Park Hawthorn, led by two-time Ace Award winner James Lemke and last year’s Ace Award winner Jarryd Maher take on powerhouse Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.

In the women’s League, Liston Tennis Club play host on Saturday before the competition moves to Kooyong on Sunday. Mornington will be looking to book their place in the finals, however injury concerns for Mornington’s Mary An Liu could swing the advantage in Kooyong’s favour this Saturday.
