In a small regional school with fewer than 100 students, creating meaningful and lasting sporting opportunities can be a challenge. Yet for Principal Josh Reid, fostering a love of tennis has become more than just a school initiative, it has become part of the culture.

Josh has been instrumental in embedding tennis into everyday school life, ensuring it is a valued and consistent part of every student’s experience. Under his leadership, tennis features prominently in the school’s daily Morning Fitness program, where Year 5 and 6 student leaders facilitate inclusive, multi-age activities with the support of staff. This approach not only develops tennis skills but also encourages leadership, teamwork and participation across all age groups.

Recognising the importance of quality coaching, Josh has ensured that every student receives weekly, year-round tennis instruction through the school’s partnership with the Margaret Court Tennis Academy. This commitment provides students of all ages and abilities with access to high-quality coaching and regular opportunities to develop their skills.

A key part of Josh’s success has been his dedication to building strong community connections. He has worked tirelessly to maintain a partnership between the school, Margaret Court Tennis Academy coach Gary Comins, and the Wahgunyah Tennis Club. Through regular communication and a shared coaching approach, Josh has helped create a seamless pathway that encourages students to transition from school-based participation into community tennis.

Beyond the school gates, Josh actively promotes club coaching opportunities through newsletters, family communications and staff advocacy, inspiring students and their families to continue their tennis journey. The results have been remarkable, with increased junior participation at the local club, stronger community engagement and greater access to lifelong tennis opportunities for young people in the region.

Despite the challenges that can come with a small regional setting, Josh has created an inclusive and sustainable model that successfully connects school, coach and community. His passion, leadership and commitment to providing opportunities for every student have made a lasting impact, inspiring a lifelong love of tennis and strengthening the fabric of the local community.
