The biggest Tennis Victoria Country Week ever staged is now underway in Greater Shepparton, with record numbers of teams competing across Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club and Mooroopna Lawn Tennis Club since Sunday 8 February.
The energy of this year’s Country Week Hump Day celebrations reached its peak on Wednesday night, with Sid Vijay crowned champion of the 1 Point POP Slam at Mooroopna Lawn Tennis Club.
Hump Day festivities were held from 4 to 7:30pm culminating in the fast-paced, winner-takes-all 1 Point POP Slam at 6pm which drew a strong crowd. All player spots were filled within the first day of registrations opening, highlighting the excitement surrounding the event.
In the high-pressure knockout format, Vijay emerged as the last player standing, claiming the ultimate prize, beer for a year, thanks to Thirsty Camel.
“I felt very thrilled and very excited – having all the people watching was incredible. It was really good fun.”
“It’s very similar to the rest of Country Week, everyone gets around you. I met a lot of people. It’s a great atmosphere. I’ll be back next year, I can’t wait.”
The prize will be officially presented on Thursday at the Thirsty Camel store in Mooroopna.
Tennis Victoria CEO Kim Kachel said the event added a new layer of excitement to Country Week.
“The 1 Point POP Slam captured exactly what Country Week is about – competitive spirit, great atmosphere and bringing people together,” Kachel said.
“Registrations filled on day one, and even with some challenging weather, the crowd turned out in force. There was incredible energy courtside, plenty of laughs and ultimately one deserving champion.”
The POP Slam also featured two wildcard entries.
Petar Jovic, State Champion for the AO 1 Point Slam and finalist this year as well as Will Taylor, content creator and first-time Country Week player.
Rachel Brown, Victorian Marketing Manager at Thirsty Camel, said the partnership was a great opportunity to recognise the winner.
“The team at Thirsty Camel Victoria are thrilled to be able to contribute to the excitement around this year’s 1 Point POP Slam. The event was a great success with players of all skill levels taking part in the equalising format.”
“It was great to see in action what makes Country Week so special – and who wouldn’t want to win beer for a year!”
