The Victorian Community Tennis Awards recognise Victoria’s on and off court success in a community tennis celebration. Congratulations to the following three finalists for the Volunteer of the Year award!
Kimon Pappas – Bulleen Tennis Club
As President of Bulleen Tennis Club (BTC), Kimon Pappas has been pivotal in driving growth and transformation. Under his leadership, membership has surged by over 70%, with numbers projected to reach 400 by the end of 2025. Court usage has tripled, and he has secured over $160,000 in grants, including a $100,000 contribution from the North East Link Community Fund for major upgrades.
Kimon’s strategic vision has enhanced the club’s financial stability, enabling continued reinvestment in facilities and programs. He has expanded social tennis, competition pathways, and introduced junior and senior programs, greatly improving club engagement and participation. Kimon has also championed strong governance and inclusivity, ensuring BTC’s long-term success. Through partnerships with Manningham Council, Tennis Victoria, and local organisations, Kimon has elevated BTC’s profile, and the club was named the WDTA Premier Club in 2024.
Peter Smith – Rutherglen Tennis Club
Peter Smith has been an instrumental figure in the growth and development of Rutherglen Tennis Club. As President, he spearheaded several key initiatives, including the installation of the IglooLock system to improve court access and leading fundraising efforts through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) and partnerships with the local Rotary Club. Peter also successfully applied for a National Court Rebate, which has funded the upgrade of the club’s lighting to energy-efficient LEDs.
He has worked closely with the Indigo Shire Council to plan the resurfacing of courts damaged by Corella birds. Peter is deeply committed to fostering community participation, leading volunteer programs such as Community Play Hot Shots, which has grown to engage over 40 children and their families. His efforts have strengthened the club’s relationships with local stakeholders, ensuring a welcoming environment for both members and visitors. Through his leadership, the club is on a clear path to sustainability and continued growth.
Sarah Milroy – Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club
Sarah Milroy has been a driving force in transforming Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club. As Volunteer Coordinator, she played a crucial role in moving away from the traditional committee structure and developing clear role descriptions for volunteers, which has boosted engagement and confidence. Her positive, supportive approach has created a welcoming and inclusive environment, where volunteers feel empowered to contribute. Sarah has been instrumental in the club’s infrastructure improvements, such as the installation of LED lighting and the development of an online court booking system, which has enhanced accessibility and increased participation.
Her involvement in the Women Leaders in Tennis Program has also brought valuable insights back to the club. Additionally, Sarah has built strong connections with Tennis Victoria, local schools, and media outlets, raising the club’s profile and expanding its community reach. Her efforts have directly contributed to the growth and success of the club.
Congratulations once again to the three volunteers that have been selected as finalists for this category!
